A Unit of Water, a Unit of Time $21.95 In a time when racing boats are mass-produced from synthetic materials, a dying breed of craftsman continues to build wooden sailboats of astonishing beauty. Boatbuilding is an ancient art, and Joel White was a master. Son of the legendary writer E.B. White, he was raised around boats and his designs were as sublime and graceful as his father’s prose. At a boatyard in Maine, White and his closely knit team of builders brought scores of his creations from blueprints into the ocean. In June 1996, six months after being diagnosed with cancer, Joel White began designing the W-76, an exquisite racing yacht. It was his final masterpiece. Douglas Whynott spent a year at Brooklin Boat Yard, observing as this design took shape, first in sketches and then during the painstaking building of the wooden craft. The result is the poignant tale of both a genius at work and the people devoted to his art. Evoking E.B. White’s New England and its salty residents, A UNIT OF WATER, A UNIT OF TIME is a classic portrait of dignity, charm, and humble magnificence — and of a maritime community that keeps a vanishing world alive. |

Building Chris-Craft: Inside the Factories $40 For more than half a century, Chris-Craft reigned supreme in the world of motorboating. This market dominance was due in no small part to the design and construction techniques employed in the company’s studios and on its factory floors.            Building Chris-Craft examines the company’s design and production heritage, looking at Chris-Craft’s considerable accomplishments in the context of key competitors and industrial trends in general.              High-quality archival images take readers inside the factories, design studios, and lofts of Chris-Craft factories in Algonac, Holland; Cadillac, Michigan; Salisbury, Maryland; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Caruthersville, Missouri. Anthony Mollica is a noted wooden boat expert and writer, as well as a trustee of the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York. The author of Gar Wood Boats: Classics of a Golden Era, Chris-Craft 1922–1972, The American Wooden Runabout, and Dodge Boats lives in Dewitt, New York. Chris Smith is the grandson of Chris-Craft founder Christopher Columbus Smith. General Aviation PJ $58.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The General Aviation PJ was a flying boat produced in the United States in the 1930s as a search-and-rescue aircraft for the Coast Guard. Originally designated FLB (for “Flying Life Boat”), it was a conventional high-wing cantilever monoplane with a flying boat hull and outrigger pontoons mounted on the wings slightly outboard of mid-span. The twin pusher engines were carried in separate nacelles on pylons above the wings. The hull was a monocogue metal structure, and the wing was a wooden structure skinned with plywood. The basic design was based on that of the Fokker F.11, but substantially enlarged (Fokker’s American operation was renamed General Aviation after purchase by General Motors in 1930). While not a true amphibian and able to land on dry land, the PJ was equipped with retractable undercarriage that functioned as its own, self-carried beaching trolley. |
