Have you ever heard of St Helens, Tasmania? If you’re a keen fisherman, you may have, but otherwise, this quaint and delightful town with a population of only 2000 on the north-east coast of Tasmania could have escaped your attention. Although the discovery of tin in the Blue Tier Mountains in 1830 was what led towards the founding of the town, settlers soon found even better treasures off the shores of Georges Bay, around which the town was built. St Helens evolved into a fishing port and remains one to this day. While fishing season tends to make finding a St Helens accommodation somewhat harder, fishing is only one of the attractions of this beautiful town.
Considering Tasmania’s reputation for cold, St Helens enjoys a remarkably mild local climate, making it a popular destination all through the year. The town’s population swells the most, though, in the month of March. That’s when the St. Helens Gaming Fishing Classic is held. Through the years, many Australian game fishing records have been broken in the waters off St. Helens along with at least six world southern bluefin tuna records. All of this record breaking has given this quaint town a prominent position on the world sports fishing map.
Unlike other sports fishing areas, where fishermen need to go far out to sea to locate deep water game fish like marlin and tuna, these magnificent fish are found practically at your doorstep in St. Helens. Half an hour after leaving the boat ramp in a chartered fishing vessel, it is possible to be in the running for a 120 kilogram (almost 265 pounds) blue fin tuna or possibly be one of the fishermen who catches one of the 200 marlin which are regularly caught within the waters off St. Helens every year.
As the largest town in north-eastern Tasmania, St Helens also is the place where northern Tasmanians go for entertainment. The biggest event of the year is the annual Suncoast Jazz Festival, held here each year in June. The biggest names in Australian jazz turn up every year, both to entertain the crowds and to play with each other. One of the highlights of the festival is the “mix and match” registration system, which teams individual musicians with one another for 30 minute sessions. For 16 hours each day in late June, music fills the air in St. Helens. Close your eyes and you could be in New Orleans! The grand finale of the Suncoast Jazz Festival is a large public concert and street parade.
Needless to mention, it is easy to enjoy some of the finest seafood in the world in St. Helens. Besides seafood, though, St. Helens presents an abundance of additional culinary delights. Apples, blueberries and raspberries are free for the picking in surrounding areas and most of the vegetable dishes on offer are locally grown in the rich soil of the surrounding area. Wine lovers will not be disappointed, either, as several award winning cool climate wines are produced in the region.
As you’ll see, while St. Helens may not be a large town, it has big attractions. Everyone in the family can find something memorable to do in this quaint and friendly town. While the big game fisherman is out catching that prize winning marlin, the rest of the family can wander through the shops, stop in at a restaurant for a sweet or savoury “elephant pancake” or simply relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. There truly is something for everyone in St Helens, Tasmania.

Fin Whale $79.66 The Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus), also called the Finback Whale, Razorback, or Common Rorqual, is a marine mammal belonging to the suborder of baleen whales. It is the second largest whale and the second largest living animal after the Blue Whale, growing to nearly 27 meters (88 ft) long.
