Aluminum Boat Building – Is Aluminum The Right Material For Your Boat?

If you are new to aluminum boat building, there are some nuances that you have to get used to. Using aluminum is a different ballgame in boat building if you have only been using wood as the material of choice in building boats. Due to its durability as a metal and its light weight, aluminum has been considered a premium material in boat building. Furthermore, with this type of material, corrosion and destruction due to constant exposure to watery environment is never an issue. That is why there’s less hassle in maintaining the condition of an aluminum boat than that of say, Wooden Boat.

The thing that you have to consider with aluminum boat building is that you have to be quite adept at welding. If you don’t have even the basic welding skills and no interest in learning, aluminum is not the right material for you. You might want to consider other alternative such as Fiberglass. If you do however, have some inclination on learning how to weld, you can find that welding classes are available in most areas. You might find one near your current location. It’s relatively quick and simple to learn the basics of welding. And learning how to weld will prove to be quite an investment in the craft of boat building.

The cost of building an aluminum boat would largely depend on the size of the boat. Comparatively speaking, it is more cost effective than building a steel or fiberglass boat. You also don’t have to spend for paints as you would a wooden boat so therein lies an additional savings for you. Furthermore, the high strength to weight ratio of aluminum allows you to build a boat which doesn’t require too much of the material to make it durable. So you may be building a very durable boat with less material. A very cost effective measure, indeed. In terms of market value, aluminum boat also proves to have a high resale value. This is largely due to the fact that boats of this type of material are resistant to corrosion therefore making it longer lasting.

If you are truly bent on building your own aluminum boat, that you can do is procure for yourself a very good boat plan that’s specifically designed for the use of this material. The boat plan should have a complete list of all the materials you’re going to need so you have a clear idea on how much you’re going to spend on the project. It is also wise to have all the materials ready as well even before construction. Personally, I am quite particular of the boat plans I’m going to use in a project. Believe me, it will be less the hassle if you spend additional time going over different boat plans. You’ll do away with unnecessary confusion and guesswork if you’ve done well in choosing your boat plan.

 Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding

Buehler’s Backyard Boatbuilding

$25.95

Everybody has the dream: Build a boat in the backyard and sail off to join the happy campers off Pogo Pogo, right? But how? Assuming you aren’t independently wealthy, if you want a boat that’s really you, you gotta build it yourself. Backyard boatbuilding has its problems. Building in fiberglass is itchy, smelly, and yields a product that yachting maven L. Francis Herreshoff once called frozen snot. Ferrocement, once all the rage, has pretty much sunk from favor, if you catch the drift. But there’s still wood, right? Ah, wood. Nature’s perfect material. You can build in the time-honored traditions of the Golden Age of Yachting, loving crafting intricate joints in rare tropical hardwoods, steaming swamp oak butts to sinuous shapes, holding the whole thing together with nonferrous fastenings that cost a buck or better each. Does that sound like boatbuilding for everyperson? What about the currently fashionable wood/epoxy boatbuilding? You butter regular old wood with Miracle Whip, stick it together in the shape of a boat, and off you go, right? Epoxy works, but They don’t exactly give it away; nor is it exactly a benign substance. Suiting up like Homer Simpson heading for a fun-filled day at the nuclear power plant isn’t exactly the aesthetic boatbuilding experience many of us are looking for. Where does that leave us? In the capable hands of George Buehler, who honors the timeless traditions of the sea all right, but those from the other side of the boatyard tracks. Buehler draws his inspiration from centuries of workboat construction, where semiskilled fishermen built rugged, economical boats from everyday materials in their own backyards, and went to sea in them in allkinds of weather, not just when it was pleasant. Buehler’s boats sail on every ocean and perform every task, from long-term liveaboards in Norwegian fjords to a traveling doctor’s office in Alaska. This book contains complete plans for seven cruising boats–from a 28-foot sailboat to a 5

Art has written this book so the reader, unfamiliar with the construction process, will understand every aspect of the process. But this is not a beginner’s-only boat building book. Advanced craftsmen and top professionals have equally as much to learn from Art’s years of experience. Art takes the reader from the first step of Building a Fiberglass Boat to the last step, in a manner that will certainly inspire all who ever pondered the notion. He expertly explains why a competent craftsman would want to undertake the seemingly overwhelming task of building his own boat. Art has described the two most popular sizes and styles of boats as examples for the project; a twenty-five-foot open boat and a thirty-three-foot cruising boat. Sail is also explained. By referring to these example boats, the reader can envision a boat of any size, limited only by the imagination. Everyone can learn from this book. If you have a boat just waiting to be built, you will now have the knowledge. If you never plan to build a boat, you will understand the entire process, making the Buying Experience far less confusing. There are no Trade Secrets, only knowledge not yet learned.

Devlin's Boatbuilding: How to Build Any Boat the Stitch-And-Glue Way

Devlin’s Boatbuilding: How to Build Any Boat the Stitch-And-Glue Way

$22.95

Why is stitch-and-glue boatbuilding so popular? Any number of construction methods will produce a beautiful boat. But for the backyard builder with limited experience and a tight budget, the choice is not so complicated. Traditional plank-on-frame and cold-molded construction require complicated lofting and building molds–to say nothing of expensive tooling and lots of time. Stitch-and-glue construction, on the other hand, can produce the same results with a substantial savings in time and money. The process is quicker, easier, uses fewer parts, and produces a boat that is much easier to maintain–without the building molds and with only the simplest lofting. For tools, you need little more than a circular saw, a sander/polisher/grinder, a block plane, a framing square, a level, and a tape measure. Sam Devlin has elevated stitch-and-glue boatbuilding to an artform, and his graceful designs have attracted the attention of backyard builders across the country. Here is all you need to know to build the boat of your dreams, whether it’s a 7-foot dinghy or a 40-foot power cruiser. Devlin’s Boatbuilding: How to Build Any Boat the Stitch-and-Glue Way shares the wisdom of his 16 years of experience designing, building, and helping others build his fleet of small sail- and powerboats. It’s all here, from choosing a design and setting up shop to painting the finished hull and launching. There is also a gallery of Devlin’s designs and a detailed appendix listing sources for tools and other materials. Here is everything you need to know about stitch-and-glue construction, from its leading proponent: Setting up shop Selecting the right marine plywood Converting plywood-on-framedesigns for stitch-and-glue construction Working with epoxy and fiberglass Proper stitching and reinforcement Finishing the hull And much more
