Recording the Speed of RC Model Boats by Clint Harvey
Remote controlled boats can accelerate and glide through the water using sails and engines powered by electric or gas. For RC boat enthusiasts, speed is a major concern especially when planning to join races or tournaments. Therefore, the speed of the vessels is something that they want to measure. However, recording the speed of floating vessels is a lot more challenging than measuring a land vehicleâ??s speed. But no matter how difficult it can be, several tools and techniques can be applied in gauging the swiftness of the boats on the water.
The most common tool used is a radar speed gun. The task at hand is easy if you follow the steps given below:
â?¢ Use the power switch to turn on the remote control then switch on the engine of the boat. When you test your boat, look for a body of water with no obstructions in the path that the boat is going to take.
â?¢ Using the remoteâ??s control sticks, check the ability of the rudder of the boat to increase or decrease in speed. You have to ensure that the features of the boat are fully functional.
â?¢ Use the power switch to turn the radar speed gun on. Check the ability of the speed to test moving objects like a bird, car or any object in motion within the area. Follow the detailed instructions in the user manual that comes with the package and make calibrations as required.
â?¢ Walk away from the boat at a distance of about 50 feet. Make sure that the distance is still within the control range so that by the time the boat crosses your path, it can reach it maximum speed.
â?¢ Hold the radar gun using one hand and the remote control in the other. Let the boat run past your location and keep it within 50 feet distance. Stand still then have the radar gun pointed toward the direction of the boat on the final pass. Check the speed by pulling the trigger. Read the recorded speed on the gauge and you will know how fast your boat is on the water.
